Scaling carbon transport and transformation in river networks
How does the spatial and temporal heterogeneity we observe in freshwater ecosystem metabolism give rise to annual, river-network metabolic regimes? How will river-network patterns in primary productivity and carbon respiration respond to shifting hydrologic regimes? I am addressing these questions through development of conceptual and quantitative models for scaling the drivers and rates of ecosystem metabolism from individual rivers to broad-scale freshwater networks.

Consequences of hydrologic connectivity for carbon and nutrient transport and fate
What are the patterns and controls on carbon and nutrient variability, cycling, and transport within and across ecosystems? I am using distributed sensor networks and new time series of hydrology, water chemistry, and ecosystem process rates to understand how landscape processes respond to disturbances like floods and droughts and to test ecosystem theory related to watershed dynamics.
